Undersea Kingdom is one of those movie serials that was so popular in the 1930s and which was shown during school holidays in the early 1980s. Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Zorro and His Fighting Legions, Daredevils of the Red Circle – I remember them all. But Undersea Kingdom was my favourite for some unknown reason. At least, it was the one which I remembered and almost no one else did. Imagine my delight when it popped up on DVD and I could at last own this piece of childhood. The sinister baddie, the scary robots, the awesome battle tank, the walls that shot fire. This was a blockbuster before blockbusters were even invented. Except I was old enough now to know that it was probably pish and tosh. Luckily, I like pish and tosh as anyone who has ever noticed my obsession with Doctor Who and the Sensorites will attest.

Me being me I bought the DVD, watched the first episode and promptly filed it away for future reference. I had relived as much of my childhood as I felt I wanted to – the first episode packs in pretty much everything I remembered so why sit through eleven more chapters of pretty much the same thing? But there was a nagging feeling in the back of my head thing. There had to be some mileage in Undersea Kingdom. Not an episode guide – that would be pointless. Nor would a succession of in jokes and quips be enough. No – I had to take each and every one of you through this ripping adventure with me. The style is somewhat fractured because it is written more or less on the fly. A text commentary if you will. As I write each instalment I genuinely don’t know what will happen next (save that which lingers after twenty something years, oh god I’m old).

So climb aboard the rocket powered submarine and let's venture down to the Undersea Kingdom.
