August 1977 in Edmonton. Edmonton in Enfield rather than Edmonton in Alberta.

Tony Scarlo - he didn't really do anything too dastardly but he was in there with a man the public loved. The highlight of the bout was when Kent Walton was describing Scarlo's trunks and said "For those of you with a colour set I believe his trunks are dark red."

The real baddie was referee Max Ward who was roundly booed by all and sundry. I don't know if it was because he was from Birmingham or just that this was an anarchist crowd which loathed figures of authority.

The Dynamite Kid - back in 1977 he was British lightweight champion, a tall, skinny young man who would go on to be a short, stocky, muscular superstar around the world. Considered by many to be pound-for-pound the best wrestler of the 1980s. Nice to know they spelt his name wrongly. Is it any wonder he went over to Canada and didn't come back?

Slim pickings in this one. I could give you this shot and hope you'll be amused but it is pretty thin fare.

Though I thought when watching the bout that Dynamite Kid might well be a good example of what the gay gentlemen call a "twink".

They exchanged a bunch of holds and did some squirming around. There is a thing in British wrestling which you don't see in any other region - the squirming to escape from holds, the chains of move and counter move, the shifts in balance which will get you out of any precarious predicament. It was a more technical style of wrestling even than the Japanese presented. Dynamite Kid would use very little of this gymnastic skill when he went around the world. He developed a much more high flying, physical style. Not that he would've been nearly as flexible once he doubled his bodyweight using them there steroids. Anyway, he won a rather one dimensional contest with a bridge. They shook hands afterwards.

We're all tied up again at 6-6 as the silver trunks wearing blue eyed boy racked up another victory.

This bout was broadcast three weeks before episode 1 of "The Horror of Fang Rock". The day of Doctor Who's return saw a four man tournament featuring Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Tony St Clair and some chap called Rex Strong. It puts lighthouses and bogie monsters into proportion.
