1982 in sunny Southend
General Raven -
sadly, not the one played by Guy Sinor in "Genesis of the Daleks" but rather this sturdy, militaristic
gentleman. He looks like a South American revolutionary, his name and
appearance suggest a Castro style dictator, his home town is
Peter Wilson - who has a formidable side parting but no nickname. He and his brother Johnny Wilson form an exciting tag team called... The Wilson Brothers. His lack of colour notwithstanding, he's a handsome, dynamic, dontchajustlovehim sort of a fellow and one we'll be cheering on against the nasty guerrilla from the jungles of Bolton.
Early on we are reminded of one of the peculiarities of British wrestling. The rule that you couldn’t do anything to a downed opponent unless it was "all part of the same move". That and the banning of closed fists would leave pretty much the entire WWE roster with nothing to do but stand around, chat and set each other on fire. What? You couldn’t set people on fire either? How did they manage?
What a heel! Raven offers a hand of friendship only to betray Wilson with a vicious blow. Or an awkward hug. In our family it is difficult to tell the difference sometimes.
"That’s the sort of fellow Raven is" says Kent Walton. That told him.
They toss each other around for a while but eventually Raven begins to focus his evil attack on Wilson’s arm. All of which leads to this devastating hold and the submission required to win the match.
We begin our charting of the endless battle between darkness and light with the sad news that evil has drawn the first blood. Good 0-1 Evil
Sadly, Doctor Who was not broadcast on the day this bout aired. It was pretty much mid-way between the gap in which the 5th Doctor and Nyssa's Big Finish adventures are set.
