Episode Twenty One 24th January 1979
With the commune in ruins, each of Reggie's friends and former colleagues departs and he finds himself once more looking for employment. He is headhunted by Amalgamated Aerosols and starts work there, only to be horrified to find that C.J.'s brother is the M.D. and C.J. is his immediate boss! With the addition of two more "yes men", history soon starts to repeat itself and Reggie looks for a train to the coast...
"...by everything smelling of Bolivian unicyclist's jockstrap". Other C.J. pearls of wisdom include "Leave no worm unturned", "Neither Mrs C.J. nor I has ever outstayed our doodah" and "We aren't one of those dreadful firms that thinks a man's on the downward slope when he starts spilling coffee down his crotch".
Reggie throws a brochure in the bin which has as its title "Perrins - A blueprint for a better world" by Reginald Iolanthe Perrin. The house is sold.
"...goodbye person" - Tom doesn't like protracted goodbyes, and returns to the world of estate agents.
"...catering front" - Jimmy leaves to work in the chairlifts business with a friend of his, and wants some food for his journey.
When Reggie phones Amalgamated Aerosols in response to their letter, he informs them that he wants to see them on Tuesday or Wednesday, preferably later in the afternoon. He'll be seeing them on Thursday morning at 9.30!
C.J. recommended Reggie to his brother F.J. Reggie will be working in the Air Freshener and Deodorant Division, located at Aerosol House. F.J. has squeaking chairs and tells Reggie that C.J. copied him. Iris Hoddle is Reggie's new secretary - Reggie describes her as very attractive but not very bright. F.J. is the M.D. and C.J. is the head of Reggie's department, and thus Reggie's immediate boss - their offices are linked by a connecting door.
"...due to passengers boarding and lighting."
When Doc Morrissey puts himself down, Reggie remarks that that's what Tony would call "Self Pitysville, Arizona". As Tony and Joan prepare to leave, Tony remarks that it's "Ciao City, Arizona" and says that he's now into responsibility. They both say a simultaneous "Knockout!" as Reggie thanks them for everything. David and Prue have jobs in the old family firm in Haverford West. Along with Reggie and Elizabeth, there is a four way "Super!" at the prospect of meeting up again one day. At Amalgamated Aerosols, Reggie meets Muscroft and Rosewall who exclaim "Marvellous!" and "Terrific!" four times in short succession. Reggie starts to explain to the staff about the smelling that they will be undertaking, which leads to two "Marvellous!" and "Terrifics!" each, with Reggie prompting them for the third time.
Towards the end of the episode, we see several flashbacks of Reggie starting to undress on the beach, as taken from the title sequence.
Doc Morrissey is going to teach English again and call himself Professor Morrissey. C.J. points out that he was Reggie's boss, then Reggie was his boss and now he's Reggie's boss again. C.J. refers to the Exotic Ices project at Sunshine Desserts, and wants no funny business again from Reggie. F.J. lives in Leatherhead.
