Episode Twelve

19th October 1977

As the Grot empire goes from strength to strength, Reggie delights in hiring his old colleagues and even Elizabeth joins her husband in the daily commute. Reggie's attempts to reconcile Joan and Tony lead to further amorous encounters. Reggie soon finds that he is getting tired of the daily routine once again however, and things are looking ominous when he starts using C.J.'s catchphrases and the hippo returns...

Reggie's rubbish shops Grot are an amazing success. Sunshine Desserts bankrupt.

At the end of the episode, as Elizabeth reminds Reggie that they are going to visit her mother on Sunday, he sees the hippo for the first time in a long while, much to his joy!

"fractured..." (Reggie can't bring himself to say any more to Miss Erith) "obstacles on the line at Berryfields" "badger hit a junction box at New Malden" "Fed up with rail delays - came by bike. 22 minutes late - slow puncture at Peckham."

When C.J. is on the phone to Reggie about coming in to see him, Reggie exclaims "Thursday the 1st at 10? Fine! Make it Friday the 4th at 3!" in a nice reversal of their roles in the first series.

"without knowing the night is darkest before the storm"

"without being a bit of a stickler for offices."

Other choice C.J. sayings include "Mrs C.J. and I have always avoided clichés like the plague.", "A cliché to me is like a red rag to the bull.", "Necessity is the matter of intention." and ""Let's hope I'm not a fait accompli worse than death!". Reggie offers C.J. the same in real terms as Reggie's salary at Sunshine Desserts. When C.J. knocks at his office door, Reggie recites the "1,2,3,4" poem that C.J. used in the second episode. Reggie's chairs make a funny noise, and he offers C.J. a cigar, a lighter and an ashtray, once again reversing their roles. C.J. refers to Tony as an upstart - and notes that the older he gets, the younger he tries to talk.

Reggie informs C.J. that "We aren't one of those dreadful firms that thinks a man's old fashioned just because he's over 50". Towards the end of the episode, Reggie remarks that "I didn't get where I am today without knowing that everything's rosy in..." and "without getting to be like..." as he realises that he is starting to resemble C.J.

Tony tells Reggie that there have been "dramatic happenings in Jelly City" and a "Sensation in Triflesville". He turns down Reggie's offer of a cigar - "Health City". As regards Reggie's offer of a job - "This is cards on the table city". When Reggie tells him he will start on June 1st, Tony's response is "Great!". Tony says he's "had C.J. up to there" and refers to Joan as "good form with a nice pair of bristols". He doesn't want to see Joan again. When Tony finds out that David will be his new boss, he utters a downbeat "Great". David greets Tony with a "Super!", and again when Reggie tells him that Tony will be working with them, leading to another "Great" and "Super" from Tony and David respectively. When all the new recruits are shocked to see each other on their first day, David pops up with a "Super!". Reggie mentions that Tony said "Great!" when Reggie told him that Joan came round to his house the previous night.

Less than two and a half years ago, Reggie opened the first Grot shop. At the start of this episode, he and Elizabeth open the 50th shop. Joan, C.J., Tony and Elizabeth will all start work at Grot on 1st June. C.J. will be accountable to the Head of Expansion (Europe), which is Elizabeth. Tony's new boss is the Head of Expansion (UK), which is David.

With C.J. now on the dole, Reggie reflects that he worked for him for 25 years. Jimmy is in London finding new recruits for his secret army. Elizabeth refers to the events of Joan's visit (Episode 3). Reggie says that Joan is more efficient than Miss Erith, and offers her a 50% salary increase to come and work for him. Joan and Tony had been married for 10 days when Tony saw the Finnish girl. Joan has reverted from Mrs Webster to Miss Greengross. Tony lives in a flat. Joan now has a zip on the front of her dress rather than the buttons she used to have, explaining to Reggie that it makes it easier to undo! Tony and Joan are reconciled by the end of the episode.

Reggie's new secretary is not Joan
