Episode Eleven 12th October 1977
With help from a loan from C.J., Reggie opens his shop Grot, in which he sells useless things, with Tom's wine being an instant hit. Realising that they should aim for products that nobody else has got, such as square hoops, things soon take off, so much so that two years on, Reggie is head of a thriving empire - Perrin Products (Grot Ltd.). Having brought some of his old colleagues over with him, Sunshine Desserts is finally declared bankrupt...
Reggie and Elizabeth both sacked. Reggie decides to open rather unusual shop.
Reggie wishes that his new, dull, secretary was Joan, and sees Joan in a bunny outfit with a giant bottle of champagne, while Reggie has a large champagne glass. When meeting Tony at Sunshine Desserts, who talks about his wedding, honeymoon and divorce with Joan, Reggie sees himself as Tarzan, swinging in to the wedding ceremony and whisking Joan away from Tony.
At the start of the episode, the letters SHINE then E--ERTS are showing. Two years later, with the company on the verge of collapse, there are just the letters SH then ERTS.
Now that he is the boss, Reggie is 22 minutes late due to "black ice at Norbiton."
"...without knowing a slight wobble when I enter one." "...without recognising Reggie Perrin when I see him!" "...without knowing that Grot would be a success." "...without recognising another slight wobble when I see one." Other C.J. pearls of wisdom include "It's the early bird that catches the quick brown fox, eh?" and "No need to beat around the mulberry bush". C.J. refers to the events of Elizabeth visiting him while talking out loud to himself just prior to Reggie arriving to see him. Reggie visits to ask C.J. for a £30,000 loan which C.J. pays, mistaking this for blackmail. C.J. refers to his accusation of Tony being the recipient of Elizabeth's affair. New slimline jellies are the latest product launch - they should end the wobble! Two years later, Reggie repays the loan with 11% interest, giving C.J. £36,600, as C.J. realises that it wasn't blackmail. New liqueur custards are now being launched, but the newspaper headline at the end of the episode states "Food firm crumbles - jelly giant bankrupt".
C.J. made David redundant just prior to his wedding to Pru. David says that being made redundant took away all his self-confidence. David says "Super!" as he gives Reggie the latest results for Perrin Products. He wonders if Tony keeps saying "Great!" all the time. When Reggie says that he reckons he does, David responds with a "Super!". As the champagne arrives, we get two more "Super's" from David. When Reggie visits Sunshine Desserts and sees Tony in C.J.'s office, Tony says "Great!" when he sees Reggie and again when Reggie asks how things are. Indeed, he remarks that "This is success city!". Tony asks if David is still saying "Super!" all the time. When Reggie confirms that he does, Tony responds with "Great!".
The first products sold at the original Grot shop included tasteless puddings, square hoops, Tom's wine (nettle, turnip and sprout) and Dr Snurd's paintings of the Algarve. Reggie envisages a string of shops from Inverness to Penzance. Reggie makes some signs with the slogans "Hundreds of ideal gifts for people you hate", "Plenty of gifts for people with no taste" and "Something nobody else has got". He takes £93.82 on the first day of trade. Two years on, there is a billboard sign with the slogan "Grot - The place for rubbish" and the slogan "Never knowingly oversold" on the side of a van. Reggie is the boss of Perrin Products (Grot Ltd.), based at Perrin House. There are now 44 Grot shops. Silent LPs are the latest launch, and have sold millions.
We see Peter Cartwright, and neighbour Mr Milford for the first time - his name is revealed as Dennis. New secretary Miss Erith is on a diet, and refuses to have any champagne. Seen at Sunshine Desserts in the very first episode, Reggie has now employed Esther Pigeon on research ("Smashing!") and Morris Coates on advertising ("With you!"). Tony married Joan, and they honeymooned on the Italian Riviera ("It was great!"). They divorced when Tony met a Finnish girl. Joan is now working at the Glycero Ointment Company in Godalming.
