Episode Five

6th October 1976

Reggie knows that his last day as an executive salesman has come. He gets drunk at lunchtime, thus giving an embarrassingly inept performance of his speech for the British Fruit Association. Slipping away from Elizabeth on the way home, Reggie manages to sabotage C.J.'s trout fishing contest, then proceeds to the coast where he contemplates drowning himself. However, deciding that the water is too cold, he makes a new identity for himself and starts to wander around the countryside...

Reggie Perrin, 46, behaving strangely, making plans for future. Crisis point approaching!

At the start of the episode, Reggie is talking to his cat, Ponsonby, and tells him that he thinks of his mother in law as a hippopotamus, leading to the obligatory hippo shot. At the office, when Joan suggests that Reggie will be so good with his speech that he could do it standing on his head, this is exactly what Reggie sees himself doing.

On Friday, his last day at the office, the sign is composed of the letters SHINE followed by ESS, a couple of spaces, and TS.

On Reggie's last day at the office, it's because "somebody had stolen the lines at Surbiton". Also, Reggie breaks his brolly in two over his knee - normally, he tries to throw it onto the hat stand and fails to make it hang on. When kind of saying goodbye to Joan later on, Reggie points out that he'll be in on Monday morning, 11 minutes late as usual.

"...by saying earwig instead of thank you."

"...without having a little champagne, not too much, just enough."

"...talking about Dutch parking meter disease." (which gets a Great from Tony).

"...shaking hands with the person on my right."

"...without getting letters from cranks."

"...without making enemies."

Even Reggie gets in on the act now, and gives us "without being glad when C.J. leaves the room" and "... C.J., without posting furtive letters through your front door.". C.J. informs Reggie that "We aren't one of those dreadful firms that believe a man's ideas are old fashioned and out of date just because he's 46." Doc Morrissey tells Reggie on Friday that C.J. hates him and is looking for an opportunity to fire him. On Saturday, Doc pronounces that C.J. is dead - so C.J. fires him. C.J.'s car's numberplate is CJ1.

We get three Greats and Supers each from Tony and David as they wish Reggie well in his office ahead of his speech. As they reveal that they will be sitting on the front row, Reggie gives them an ironic Great and Super. On Saturday, while fishing, they remark Great and Super to C.J. to signify how they are getting on, although David is distinctly not enjoying himself.

On Friday, Reggie offers Peter his programme for the Fruit Association of Bilberry Hall. As it's his last day of commuting, Reggie shocks his fellow commuters by throwing his briefcase out of the train window. Peter is married to Ursula.

The symbol of the British Fruit Association is a banana and two apples - rather unfortunate, as Reggie remarks. The view from Reggie's office includes the gasworks in the marshalling yard. Joan tells Reggie that he is an incredible boss. C.J.'s trout fishing competition is held in Hampshire. At the end of the episode, Reggie is 9 miles from Lyme Regis, according to a signpost.
