"A Losing Streak" 4th November 1982
As this episode begins, Rodney is watering down perfume and Del is trying to sell a "genuine Ethiopian Mink" coat ("from Babylon") on the telephone.
Del orders a "large shivers regal with coke".
Boycie is a second hand car dealer from Lewisham. He owns a swimming pool. The Trotter’s Mum had a lucky rabbits foot. Grandad was never any good at cards. Del once again tells the story of how the Trotter’s Dad walked out on them, and confirms that it was just after their Mum died. He also states that it was on his 16th birthday, so if Del was 36 in "Big Brother" (screened in September 1981), Dad walked out in [September] 1961, with Joanie Trotter dying in possibly June 1961. This would make Rodney 3 when his Father walked out, however in "Big Brother" Del says he was six. [Either Del is lying for dramatic effect here when he says their Dad walked out on his 16th birthday, or Rodney was younger than six when this happened] Del claims to have "designed" the flat himself [unlikely, unless he just means the interior]. A new barmaid, Julie, is working at the Nags Head. Grandad had kidney stones.
Marlene is mentioned for the first time, and is implied to be Boycie’s wife or girlfriend. "All the boys remember Marlene", apparently.
When John Chalice says "…no, not Dallas… definitely not Dallas….", it sounds like he’s forgotten the punch line to the gag he’s stumbling towards the conclusion of.
"…a children’s charity. Marlene’s easily touched." "Yes, as Del said earlier, all the lads remember Marlene"!
My fellow columnist Ant Cox might be interested to know that the red-headed actress who plays Julie the new Nags Head barmaid can also be seen briefly in the "Kipper and the Corpse" episode of "Fawlty Towers", playing a non-speaking floozy ("sorry to have kept you!" notes Basil)…
…and she also pops up in the (budget-challenged) crowds on Zanak in "The Pirate Planet"! Gets about a bit, that one…
