Brother Beyond

Brother Beyond formed in 1987 and consisted of members Eg White, Nathan Moore, Carl Fysh and David White. With songs such as "I Should Have Lied" and "Chain Gang Smile" they were going nowhere - until they were picked up by Stock Aitken Waterman in 1988, apparently after "winning an auction".

SAW sacked Eg White (the songwriter) and brought in session drummer Steve Alexander (not that one) and the 'Yond promptly became the biggest band in the history of the world.

Fronted by the handsome Nathan Marcellus Moore (and some tight jeans on "Top of the Pops". We all would), "The Harder I Try" made number 2 in the summer of 1988, followed up by "He Ain't No Competition" and the "Get Even" album, which both sold quite well. The band became pop of choice for people who didn't like Bros or New Kids.

Alas, most people back in the day liked either Bros or New Kids. SAW wern't fools and it soon became clear that the band weren't a good long-term proposition. Third single "Be My Twin" missed the Top 10, so it didn't need Carol Vorderman to work out that Uncle Pete wasn't going to shell out for a second album.

The follow-up to "Get Even", "Trust" was eventually released on an independent label, but bombed out the charts without any promotion.

"Trust" was an awful album, sounding like it was made for about seventy pence. Actually the first album was awful as well, but boasted good singles. When the 'Yond's cheapo cover of "When Will I See You Again" scraped into the Top 50, it was pretty much the end of them chartwise.

The band disbanded in 1990. Childline had to set up helplines to stop distraught teenagers committing suicide. Not really.

Nathan Moore was possibly unique (apart from Mariama from the Honeyz) in being picked up by another teen band - Worlds Apart - when Brother Beyond split. He later managed Jessica Garlick and ruined Lisa Scott-Lee's career live on satellite telly. In 2002 he recorded a duet with Kim Wilde (the song was never released due to "lack of interest" and he now gives it away free), and two years later was arrested for kerb crawling near Kings Cross and soliciting a female prostitute despite being an old gayer.

This year, Moore made a Channel 4 TV show called "Boys Will Be Girls" in which some lost blokes from Fast Food Rockers dressed up as girls. For some reason. Last month he announced on his website that he "no longer manages any acts" (perhaps realising that he should stick to something he's good at), although apparently he is keeping poor James Fox on as a hobby.

Steve Alexander joined Duran Duran for six years, while Caryl Fysh went into PR and now handles Bob Dylan's press. David White does some painting sometimes.

Eg White, the songwriter SAW dumped, wrote number one single "Leave Right Now" for Will Young and won an Ivor Novello. Ho, ho!

As you'd expect, everything is available for the price of a ham sandwich. Also a weird thing called "The River Sessions" has just come out on import. I've no idea what it is, but it looks very exciting and there are arms on the front cover. I suspect pre-SAW Eg White demos recorded on a walkman.

Nathan, today (ish). Police women disguised a prostitute not shown.
