BBC Audience research concluded that the serial was “A bit dull”, “Historically untenable”, “Worthy of an invoice for the time I wasted watching it” and “a sign that Dr Who has run out of steam”. Some people liked it though – one viewer from Manchester said it was “Okay, daddio”.

The wooden horse used at the hilarious climax of the story was a scale model and not, as was reported at the time, the second biggest prop at the BBC (after Jimmy Edwards’ moustache.)
