"Doctor Who and the Tribe of
100,000 Cavegums", "Dr Who", "Story A"

"The One with 'There Will Be
No Fire'" ( USA ), "Doctor Who in a Prehistoric Adventure With the Cave
Monsters" (Target)

Doctor Who is rather grumpy
and takes his new companions to somewhere primitive

*** - This one story
establishes the entire ethos of Dr Who - time travel, fantastic adventures
and no one being allowed to smoke

"If we're lucky, we'll get
another 13 weeks" (Verity Lambert before recording began)

"My father made pants"

Aletha Charlton is Bobby
Charlton's sister and sports a very similar comb over hair style
CE “Bunny” Webber, co-writer
of parts of this story, earned his nickname by removing his chest hair
during the mating season and using it to insulate his house.
The Doctor’s pipe was
originally intended to be a regular portion of the show – with Mr Hartnell
giving tips to aspiring young smokers. Sadly, in October 1963 the BBC
discovered that smoking was likely to lead to death and their policy had
to be changed. Blue Peter’s guide to blending your own tobacco was
terminated before the final part and led to the switchboard receiving
eight thousand complaints.
This was the first story to
take advantage of the BBC’s new photocopying machine and a fault led to
the line “I will make fire” being repeated six hundred times in the copied
scripts.
Verity Lambert was the first
woman employed by the BBC whose job description didn’t include wearing
curlers in her hair, calling everyone “duck” and singing wartime songs out
of tune.
Anthony Coburn got his
inspiration for the desolate wastes of prehistoric Earth from a trip to
Birmingham .
This story was released as a
script book during the 1990s as it was thought that watching the episodes
on video couldn’t match the excitement of reading the words on paper. It
was also released under entirely the wrong name. This was a deliberate
attempt to create controversy and make hard core fans buy two copies – one
to keep in their collections and one to burn publicly.

"I was once interviewing
Carole "Anne" Ford for a documentary series that I had commissioned myself
to produce, star in, write, direct and distribute to local science fiction
and other sensible hobby shops. She smiled what the proles might assume
was an attractive smile as she remembered a story from her time in "Doctor
Who". About bloody time too - I'd been there seventeen minutes and all
she'd done was talk about trivial matters. "I remember being terribly
embarrassed when I said 'two to nineteen' instead of 'nineteen to two' in
the first episode" she told me. "Don't be pathetically stupid" I quipped,
"that was in the pilot episode." Myself and Ian Devine laughed at her
ridiculous error until tea came out of our noses. With hindsight I
should've waited until I got home to tell him rather than telephoning
while still in Miss Ford's lounge. I don't think she was too pleased. Oh
well, that's life."
