"This is the beginning of my Hartnell-a-thon,
my attempt to go through the entire William Hartnell era of Doctor Who, in
order, in one summer. I'll be using DVDs, videos, audio CD soundtracks and
Loose Cannon reconstructions to aid in this experience. After every
half-hour episode, I'll be writing some brief notes – it might be a
paragraph, it might be a lot more – where I collect my thoughts as I watch
the progression of Doctor Who as a drama in its formative years: I imagine
I'll talk not just about stories themselves, but about the acting,
writing, directing, and beyond, even into series-wide concepts and
influences. I'm probably going to get a bit literary and a bit "deep." I
often do.
What I won't be doing are actual "reviews," per se, or any of the little
games fans sometimes play: that I'm in the 1960s and none of the rest of
the series has happened, that I'm restricting myself to one episode a
week, none of that. The idea is just to get through the Hartnell years as
I can, when I can, and to see how I am influenced by watching it in strict
chronological order.
So without further ado, let's start, eh?"
