The
Basics - Issue 183, 19 February 1992. The front cover is the artwork
from the BBC Video release of Robot, copies of which are included in a
competition inside.
Indicia - "Do you think one of these plants would
look nice in the TARDIS?" Mel asked innocently as she was herded into
the cargo hold of the Hyperion III...
News And Views - Repeats of stories from each
Doctor's era got under way on 3rd January with The Time Meddler,
preceded by new documentary Resistance Is Useless. The Daleks and
Cybermen will get special video releases in 1992, along with two Tom
Baker Years tapes and an adaptation of Shada. Logopolis and Castrovalva
will now be released in March, with The Aztecs and The Claws of Axos in
May.
New Fiction - The Foreign Hazard Duty encounter
the Sontarans in the complete comic strip Conflict of Interests.
Reviews - Off The Shelf reviews Robot ("an all
round good, traditional romp and one not to be missed") and The
Caves of Androzani ("probably the single best story JNT produced").
Boxpops - The Mind Robber parts two to five are
transmitted on BBC2 on Fridays from February 7th to the 28th. Top of the
pop charts in February 92 were the continuing Goodnight Girl and Stay by
Shakespears Sister.
Skaro Says - Andrew Curnow remembers being very
excited about the imminent release of Logopolis and Castrovalva, which
he hadn't seen since 1981 and 1982 respectively. Si Hart was also
excited when he heard about Castrovalva's release, having waited for
ages to see it again. He already had a copy of Logopolis by then, and
didn't buy Caves of Androzani, though Andrew did.
Critique - Here we have the fourth artwork cover
in a row, and it's a cracker (even if it wasn't specially commissioned
for the magazine). The highlight of this issue for me has to be the
behind the scenes article on The Daleks' Masterplan, with plenty of rare
photos courtesy of Ray Cusick and Barry Newbery. Travelling Companions
cleverly ties in with this, with a double bill featuring Katarina and
Sara. Linking in a main article or interview with smaller related items
was a good idea and used more and more from now on. Once again, the
comic strip is a disappointment and a clearly hastily created one after
the problems with Evening's Empire. In theory, having the FHD (a staple
of the DWM comic strip of this era) fighting the Sontarans sounds good,
but again the artwork is of a poor standard and very offputting.
Nostalgia features Terror of the Vervoids this issue, and I do recall at
the time being very disappointed with the choice as the story was only a
shade over five years old! I'm fairly sure without checking that this
proved to be the last in the series after a near six year run, and it
had certainly had its day...
