The
Basics - Issue 177, 4 September 1991. The main photo on the front
cover is of the dinosaur from The Silurians.
Indicia - Ha! So you finally noticed this secret
message to all our Dalek agents, eh? Well, it's too late now. The invasion
has already begun!
News And Views - The BBC have announced that the
show's independent production will begin in 1992. BBC2 will show the pilot
episode for the first time on 26th August, as part of a day devoted to the
closure of the Lime Grove studios. With both Years Tapes making the Video
Top Ten, the Pertwee release will go ahead, with other Doctors to follow.
Writer Don Houghton died in July after a lengthy illness. Gary Leigh,
editor of fanzine DWB, has a letter published. Another letter writer
suggests that BBC Video could include the existing studio recording for
The Claws of Axos for an extended release...
Reviews - Off The Shelf reviews the Years Tapes ("six
fairly splendid episodes"), The Three Doctors ("a splendid four
episode romp; the second best tape issued so far in 1991"), The Masque
of Mandragora ("the best tape so far [in 1991]; virtually flawless")
and Timewyrm : Genesys ("a good story but disappointed with the overall
end product").
Boxpops - Staying top of the pop charts throughout
September 91 was Bryan Adams.
Skaro Says - Andrew Curnow thinks that the review
quote for the Years Tapes would more accurately be "four fairly splendid
episodes, plus a bit of The Celestial Toymaker and some of The Space
Pirates"! Sidesk thinks that this issue is not bad all round, with a nice
cover and some good bits in the comic strip. He tried the drabble
competition, but didn't enter it.
Critique - This is one of those rare issues where
the main cover photo seems to have no connection with any of the contents
- which wouldn't be so bad if at least it were a striking image! I visited
the MOMI Exhibtion at around this time, making use of the discount voucher
inside, leaving a gaping hole on page 5 of my issue. I remember being a
bit disappointed at the time with the choice of The Visitation for
Nostalgia, as it was then too recent for me to think nostalgically of it,
though at this moment in time it does now count! The main highlight of
this issue for me though is the Those Radio Times feature on the Tom Baker
era coverage, though ironically the listings magazine has given much more
coverage to the show during the past 12 months than it did for the whole
of his seven years...
