The
Basics - Issue 166, 31st October 1990. The main photo on the front
cover is of Nicola Bryant, who is interviewed inside, and the back cover
pin up is from Warriors of the Deep.
News And Views - Former producer Graham Williams
died in August in a shooting accident at home. Still with no announcement
on the future of the show, the DW office officially closed on August 31st,
ending JNT's tenure as Producer. Original costumes from the series have
begun to be auctioned. David Tudor writes in to complain about the
excessive pricing on recent BBC Video releases and another letter writer
asks for the return of old foes in Season 27 - including the Autons...
Notables - A new regular feature, Controversy
Corner, debuts looking at Regeneration vs Rejuvenation.
Boxpops - The second series of One Foot In The
Grave debuts on BBC1 on 4th October. Top of the pop charts in October 1990
were the continuing Show Me Heaven and A Little Time by The Beautiful
South.
Skaro Says - Regarding the Controversy Corner
piece, Andrew Curnow does remember the regeneration vs rejuvenation debate
going on in the letters pages for a long time. Sidesk notes that this
cover is mentioned in The Completely Useless Encyclopaedia for
predicatable reasons, and Tim Hawtin agrees that this is the best cover
for a long time!
Critique - This is a sold issue overall, with a
good mix of interviews, including one with the make up designer on Mawdryn
Undead which acts more as a behind the scenes piece, and includes some
unflattering photos of Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton with their aged
make up on! The news of the death of Graham Williams was sad, although I
first knew about it via DWB which gave it front cover status. Fellow
Travellers draws to an excellent close, and I like the revelation that the
house belongs to the Doctor, and the framed picture of Jamie and the
Second Doctor hanging on a wall. In this early post-series era, the move
to more "fan-oriented" articles continues with a Case Studies piece on The
War Lord and The War Chief, with decent artwork by Colin Howard, and the
new feature Controversy Corner. Finally, it's good to see PS's own Dave
Tudor getting a name check, and that other letter writer mentioned above
was spot on - but had to wait 14 and a half years...
