The
Basics - Issue 155, December 1989. The front cover has a photo of
Daleks, as Nemesis of the Daleks concludes inside.
News And Views - Season 26 got off to a poor start
in the ratings, with 3.1 milllion viewers for the first episode putting
the show out of the BARB Top 100. Ratings climbed to 3.8m and 3.9m for the
following two episodes. There may now be no new DW produced for
transmission in 1990. Funding is in place for the new film, though no new
information has been released. With reviews of Season 26 restricted to
readers' letters, these are 90% in favour of Battlefield.
Notables - The annual Merchandise Update features
Dapol, various books, videos, records and tapes and fanzines.
Boxpops - Top of the pop charts in December 89 were
the continuing New Kids On The Block, Let's Party by Jive Bunny and the
Masterrmixers and Do They Know It's Christmas by Band Aid II.
Critique - We see out the 1980s with the third
Dalek cover in the last four issues (and fourth out of five if you include
the DWM 10th Anniversary Special which had recently been released) - as a
fan of the Daleks, I didn't mind though! The ratings news was of course
very disappointing, although GG does its best to gloss over this. In fact,
with them also claiming that the long-mooted film was under way, and that
no news of a new series might be good news, they could give the current
government a few lessons on the art of spin! Once again, the Strip feature
was a very good read, and included a tantalising glimpse of what lay ahead
for the Marvel strips. And with Nemesis of the Daleks finishing in
dramatic style, it's quite a good issue to round off the decade (cover
date wise).
