The Basics - Issue 144, January 1989. The front cover is a festive photo of a Spitting Image style Seventh Doctor and Ace.

News And Views - The ratings have increased for the start of Season 25, with Part Two of Remembrance of the Daleks gaining the highest individual rating for three years with 5.8 million. Target hardback releases have been discontinued with the last one published being The Smugglers. The series remains off the air on Super Channel in December. Latest merchandise releases include a double cassette of Genesis of the Daleks/Slipback and the 25th Anniversary Album. All letters published relating to Remembrance of the Daleks are very enthusiastic about it.

Boxpops - Superboy debuts on ITV on 7th January. The Chart Show moves from Channel 4 to ITV. Top of the pop charts in January 89 were Especially For You by Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan and Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart by Marc Almond feat. Gene Pitney.

Critique - Despite the awful cover, which surely ranks as one of the worst ever, this is a good issue, with an interesting feature on the changes between the originally scripted version of The Chase and what ended up on the screen (a few months ahead of the forthcoming Target novelisation) and a festive look at the Top 10 Turkeys of the first 25 years - some of them were deserving of the accolade, but they were harsh on others, including Invasion of the Dinosaurs, which I personally think is great! The news of the end of the Target hardbacks didn't impact on me as I couldn't afford them, and always bought the paperbacks! It was encouraging at the time to see the improved ratings for Season 25, though they are poor compared to what the show achieved in 2005...

Paying the bills

Mixing comedy and Doctor Who - what a strange idea.
