The
Basics - Issue 124, May 1987. The front and back covers have photos of
Sylvester McCoy (The New Doctor!) and Bonnie Langford hanging out of the
TARDIS door.
News And Views - Kate O'Mara will return as the
Rani in the new season, which is almost certain to follow the same
structure of 4-4-6. JNT has stated that there are no plans to bring in a
new companion. After disappointing ratings last year, it remains to be
seen whether the show will remain on Saturdays or be moved. For this issue
only, the letters page is entitled Pick of the Penguin - the new,
permanent name change will occur next issue.
Notables - A new series, Forum, debuts with
contributions from readers - the first one asks if there could be a female
Doctor.
Reviews - Off The Shelf reviews The Massacre
("a fine book") and interviews its author, John Lucarotti.
Boxpops - Top of the pop charts in May 87 were
the continuing Madonna and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship.
Skaro Says - Craig Rollins wasn't pleased
to see that the Rani would be returning, as he had hated her in Season 22.
He can't believe that a McCoy six parter was seriously considered, as he
finds it hard to imagine what one would be like. Jonno finds it
interesting that JNT soon changed his mind about a new companion, and
notes with hindsight that the temporary letters page title was that year's
April Fool! Andrew Curnow likes the cover, and feels nostalgic about that
photo-shoot introducing the new Doctor. He much prefers the Rani's second
story to her first, and feels that the Massacre novelisation is OK, but a
bit rushed. Jon Masters thinks that the cover is bad, but liked the John
Lucarotti and Gerry Davis interviews.
