The
Basics - Issue 122, March 1987. The front cover has a publicity photo
of Bonnie Langford and a bearded Colin Baker.
News And Views - GG confirms that Colin Baker
has relinquished his part as the Doctor, rejecting an offer to appear in
the first four episodes of the next season. JNT, who had been set to
leave, has been asked to produce another season. There is no new script
editor yet. Most of the letters reflect on Colin Baker's departure.
Reviews - The third story of Season 23 is
reviewed - "This was a colourful, gaudy, absorbing, convincing story."
Off The Shelf reviews The Ambassadors of Death ("not a bad book")
and The Macra Terror ("a good book, mainly because the story it is
based upon is so very good.")
Boxpops - Top of the pop charts in March 87 were
the continuing Stand By Me, Everything I Own by Boy George and Respectable
by Mel & Kim.
Skaro Says - Craig Rollins remembers the
awful cover, and wasn't too bothered that Colin Baker was going, having
never warmed to him. He felt that the show had really lost the plot over
recent years, and that a new Doctor could give it a much needed shot in
the arm. Jonno agrees that the cover is one of the worst ever, and feels
that this issue marks the start of a decline for the magazine. Jonno
bought the Pyramids of Mars video (his first ever DW one) soon after this
issue came out, with its Nostalgia feature on the story he feels being an
influence on the purchase. Having seen a photo of the bearded Colin Baker
before the Trial season began, Andrew Curnow was worried that he would
look like that in the show! He was disappointed to see Colin go, and feels
that Ambassadors of Death is a very dull book, with The Macra Terror
little better.
