The
Basics - Issue 116, September 1986. The front cover has a photo from
The Leisure Hive and artwork of the Sixth Doctor from the comic strip,
while the back cover pin-up is from Creature From The Pit.
News And Views - Honor Blackman and Michael Craig
will guest star in the third story of the new season, which will be
written by Pip and Jane Baker, except for episode 13 by Robert Holmes. The
season will retain its Saturday slot. The planned video release of Talons
of Weng Chiang is now unlikely to go ahead, due to problems with the
censors. Stephen Morgan of Gwent writes in, wanting to see a feature on
BBC Video and explanations for the editing of the recent releases. He also
asks in MDB why there was a hand on the seat of Sutekh in the Pyramids of
Mars video.
Previews And Reviews - Off The Shelf reviews
Slipback - "a good read; funny and detailed." The first story of
the 23rd season is previewed - "it looks as though the public will tune
in in force. It shows a clarity of plot that is refreshing. The trial plot
is an excellent and superbly executed ploy to sustain further interest."
Boxpops - Chocky's Challenge debuts on ITV on 29th
September. The BBC1 line up for the evening of Saturday 6th September had
a new series of Roland Rat - The Series (presented by BBC3), a new series
of Doctor Who, a special edtion of Telly Addicts (EastEnders vs Howards'
Way), a new series of Every Second Counts, a new series of The Russ Abbot
Show, the first ever episode of Casualty, the film Saturn 3, the News,
Blott on the Landscape and the film Relentless. BBC2 was dominated by
cricket and US Open Tennis. Paul McGann starred in The Monocled Mutineer
on Sunday nights on BBC1. Barry Norman's Film 86 returned for a new series
on Tuesday nights on BBC1, featuring a review of Aliens.
Top of the pop charts in September 86 were the
continuing Boris Gardiner and Don't Leave Me This Way by The Communards.
Skaro Says - Andrew Curnow recalls that the preview
for the new season made it all seem so exciting, although it is clear now
that JNT had a hand in what was printed at the time. He was annoyed at the
time that the return of the show didn't make the front cover of the Radio
Times. He feels that the Slipback novelisation is another good Saward
read, though he's not too sure about the cover! This was the first year
that Craig Rollins taped and kept an entire season of Doctor Who -
however, Season 23 turned out to be his second least favourite season
ever! He feels that the line in the preview about clarity of plot is the
ultimate proof that the magazine was being told what to print. Looking
back now, Jonno doesn't feel nostalgic at all about the Saturday night
BBC1 line up. It's nowhere near as strong as the late 70s to early 80s,
although he concedes that it's much better than the present day! He
noticed that Stephen Morgan had a thing about his BBC Videos as he kept
writing in about them! Si Hart started secondary school at this time, but
unlike when Peter Davison was the Doctor, being a fan now was something he
tended to keep to himself about, as sadly no-one was watching the show now
- a point that Craig concurs with...
