The 30 best movies of all time (according to IMDb)

I was browsing the IMDb today and found their list of the top 250 movies of all time according to their readers. It is an interesting list (but far too long to deal with here) and it is appalling to see how many of these I haven’t see. Insert embarrassed emoticon.

The Godfather (1972) I have it on video (twice) and did start it but it was slow and I’m afraid I lost interest.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) I’ve had people raving about this film but it has never appealed to me.
The Godfather: Part II (1974) Not likely until I watch Part I
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) see Godfather : Part II
Casablanca (1942) I’ve lived 27 years without (a) seeing it and (b) wanting to. It’s not really my sort of film. I fear I’m too dead inside to appreciate a romance which doesn’t have Hugh Grant umming and ahhing in that way that he does.
Schindler's List (1993) It’s always seemed too depressing to risk watching but I know I’ve missed the point there.
Shichinin no samurai (1954) I’ve never even heard of this one.
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Now this one arrived in the post today and hopefully by the time you read this I will have seen it.
Citizen Kane (1941) Hurrah! About time. One I’ve seen. I didn’t especially like it though. Damn.
Star Wars (1977) Oh yes. One that’s as much a part of my childhood as Monster Munch (beef not onion) and playing with Boba Fett. A touch overrated but still good.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) Nope.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) I don’t know how or why this has slipped past me as I adore Peter Sellars. My bad.
Rear Window (1954) I started it but didn’t finish it. Yet.
Memento (2000) Utterly brilliant. Really. Maybe the best film I’ve ever seen. I’ve recommended it to loads of people. I’ve yet to watch the DVD extra where it plays in chronological order though. Maybe one day.
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) My favourite part of the quintilogy because the babyfaces get their asses handed to them by the heels.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) It’s been ages but I still like the Indi films. Shame the DVD set has been disappointing to people as I would’ve bought it. Bizarre fact – go to the official website and see that they’ve decided Temple of Doom is the first film and Raiders is after it.
Usual Suspects, The (1995) I’ve not see it yet. I’ve heard the big spoiler but thankfully I have a Guy Pearce memory and I’ve forgotten what it was.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Another one that I started but never finished. I suck.
North by Northwest (1959) I had a Hitchcock run a year or so back but lost interest before this one got into my VCR.
Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Le (2001) The only thing standing between me and this film is that the DVD is always reduced but there is a 2 disc version which never is. I can’t buy the inferior one (I just can’t, ok?) and won’t pay twice as much for the cynical cash-in two disc one that was released about a month after the original.
Psycho (1960) People laugh at me when I say I’ve seen the 1998 remake.
12 Angry Men (1957) We watched this as part of General Studies at school. I can see why it is so good but I don’t especially want to see it again.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962) It’s long and sandy. Not a good combo. Sounds rather uncomfortable to me.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991) I’m not terribly into horror films.
Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966) Yes. Whatever. Sounds like some French nonsense to me.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946) Oh my. I watched this near Christmas the year before last and it was amazing. It single handedly showed me what films are all about. I was ready to dismiss it as overrated until the ending. It made me cry. Magnificent.
Goodfellas (1990) I like their pizzas. What film? No idea, sorry.
American Beauty (1999) Next.
Sunset Blvd. (1950) Next.
Vertigo (1958) Yes – the Hitchcock run previously mentioned encompassed this one and it was rather good.

So I come out of this exercise looking like an ignorant gibbon who has been sealed in a Perspex box for most of the last 27 years. Oh well, if you can’t bare your soul on the internet for an estimated 2 billion people to read (I wish…) then where can you?
