The Green Death Outtakes
As many regular readers will know, when
preparing ‘The Green Death’ for DVD release earlier this year, the
Restoration Team were advised that, as the story would be issued on a
single disc, there wouldn’t be room for much more than about 40 minutes of
material. Although this material as it exists is both informative and
entertaining, it has come to light that the RT were able to get their
hands on a series of out-takes from the production, however the assembled
material was too long to be included on the disc. This site is now
exclusively able to reveal some of the material which didn’t make it.
(i) Jon Pertwee misreading one of his
lines from Part One, thus: "So, the fledgling flies the Co-Op".
(ii) During the dinner-at-the-Nuthutch
scene, Nicholas Courtney has a violent allergic reaction to the high
protein fungus and vomits copiously in Stewart Bevan’s lap.
(iii) A collection of on-set pranks
including the substitution of a pair of plastic breasts for the headphones
Stevens uses to communicate with BOSS during recording of the last episode
and laughs aplenty when one of the uninflated condoms used to make the
maggots is replaced by a used one, to the embarrassment of the visual
effects trainee entrusted with blowing them up.
(iv) Candid footage of John Levene doing
a cross-stitch picture of a teddy while waiting for his cue.
(v) Jon Pertwee trying to put Stewart
Bevan off his stride by constantly making "baa" noises during the final
scenes of Part Six.
(vi) Candid footage of Stewart Bevan and
Katy Manning doing it on Bessie’s back seat on location.
(vii) The characters playing the Welsh
miners simultaneously dropping their trousers in mid-scene to reveal the
words "ENGLISH TOSSERS" written in black marker on their buttocks. As the
markers issued to the Who production team in 1973 were uniformly
indelible, this may be the origin of the fan rumour that Talfryn Thomas
had the phrase "E.T. NO" tattooed on his posterior.
(viii) Barry Letts, having seriously hit
the gin during one of the studio sessions, telling the entire cast that
Moonbase 3 is going to be the best sci-fi series ever and if he has
anything to do with it, their contracts are all going to be cancelled,
before challenging Terrance Dicks to a fight and passing out on the BOSS
set.
(ix) Jon Pertwee performing all the
Metebelis 3 location sequences stark naked.
Needless to say, the nature of the above
material made it impossible to release on commercial DVD, so the footage
will remain in the private collection of (Anonymous Influential Fan) until
such time as all the above are deceased and/or the world is ready for the
sight of a BBC visual effects trainee accidentally swallowing a mouthful
of semen.
