Advice From Aunty Carol
(editor's note - this agony
advice column is genuine, unlike much on this site)

I actually have a very real
dilemma on my hands but it has to be resolved within the next day or so,
so advice is promptly required! I am likely to accept a new job any day
now. The trouble is, I've just had permission from the old place (who are
unaware of my intention to move) to spend £800 on a training course, so I
can get myself a testing certification! Now, I'm worried that if I hand my
notice in next week, they might think I'm taking the piss by spending
money doing a course. In fact, the three day course would probably be in
my very last week at work! The last day for cancelling the course before
they make you pay at least 50% of it, is this Thursday. I've already got
written permission to spend the money, so technically I'm ok. But will
they be cross if I'm using my last days at work spending their training
budget on skills they'll never get any use out of? Advice please?
Worried from Sawbridgeworth xx
Hi Si
Congratulations on the new
job! Well done! But, let's get this dilemma out of the way shall we? I'd
just be honest with them, personally. It's not actually the easiest
option, and there's always the chance someone will be pissed off with you.
But chances are they won't be, and you might even be able to do the
training course with no guilt. Like you say, 'technically' you have
written permission to do it. The big thing is telling them you're going.
You might as well do it now, I think.
