Advice From Aunty Carol

advice column is genuine, unlike much on this site)

Dear Aunty Carol,
I've just been offered a job.
The situation at my "old place" has been dire for a while, culminating in
a jaunty round of quick-fire redundancies just before Christmas. However,
now they have made a "fresh start" and assure us all is well. They have
assigned me new responsibilities and apparently we're set to turn over a
profit for the first quarter. I don't want to go for another trip down
Redundancy Lane come Christmas, but it's going to be hard telling them I'm
going, especially as I've spent the past month learning how to support
their network. Also the new place is a good hour away, where currently I
have a trip to work that makes the TV career of Diane Louise-Jordan look
like a long hike. It's further to travel, and a big risk that I'll get on
okay, but I'm not really happy where I am. Do I risk giving up stability
and familiarity for the new and unexplored? Advice please Mrs.
Yours, Bryonie Pritchard
Well, Mr. Hunt...I mean, Ms.
Pritchard...let's see... (Realises these are serious dilemmas that could
impact on somebody's life, and panics....tries the door only to find that
Lissa has locked her in until all problems are answered...)
Ok, then... I used to work in
a record shop briefly, a long while ago. A dingy vinyl shack in Bolton it
was. It was great, but I was in my late teens and it was well cool getting
getting classic album discounts and seeing which free Smiths T-shirt your
tits looked best in...but if I was still there it'd be a tragic waste.
Unless I could have ended up running the store...or even a chain of
stores.
Fuckit, why didn't I stick it
out?!...Haha, you see!? It's a tough one to call.
Saying all that, I had a place
at Uni, and that's why I left that particular job. Went on to different
and more fulfilling things. If your current position doesn't really do it
for you, and makes you feel all wasted and unfulfilled, then the obvious
answer is to do something about it and get out. But, personally, I'd
advise preparation and avoiding doing anything in a fit of pique. "Hah!
That'll show the corporate bastards!" sounds very impressive and worthy,
but we've all got rent to pay (or mortgages, or whatever...) Think it
over, and consider whether this job is going to get you somewhere better.
If it does, you might be best staying. If not, that's half the problem
solved. Make sure your financially secure enough to ditch the old place,
though, just in case you do make a big move. At the end of the day free
Smiths T-shirts are nice, but you need more incentives than that...if you
get my comparison/analogy/whatever it is.
Sometimes, if you don't take a
chance on something you might be watching the dream boat sailing off into
the distance. Fear holds us back a lot of the time. Caution is a
necessity, but Fear is usually a shocking disability.
Let me know how it goes!
And...Good luck! x
Carol
