Location, Location, Location! (Part One)
Back
in the days when we had nothing to do at weekends, Andrew and I would
often visit various filming locations used for Doctor Who, although
this in itself is not an uncommon pastime for fans of the programme.
Aldbourne, the Wiltshire village location used for The Dæmons, was
a favourite of ours, and indeed we’ve made the journey down the M4 from
London many times over the years. On the final couple of occasions we went
to Aldbourne, Andrew and I were accompanied by his two brothers, as at the
time we were all boy-racers (with the exception of Andrew himself) who
enjoyed taking our respective cars out for long drives on sunny Sunday
afternoons. I think the popularity of this location for us was the fact
that there is quite a lot to see around the area, and apart from anything
else it happens to be a very picturesque village in a beautiful part of
the
countryside. I particularly
enjoyed visiting St Peter’s church (as blown up at the end of the story)
not because I am particularly religious, but because it has a very calming
and relaxed atmosphere within it, and also has an interesting history in
itself. The Blue Boar pub on the green was also visited on every
occasion that we descended on the village to provide some much needed
refreshment, and we always looked out for the original Cloven Hoof sign
which was usually on show in a corner of the pub.
Other
filming locations that we visited were the Hammersmith location for Coal
Hill School and the roads behind Waterloo Station as used in
Remembrance of the Daleks, and in March 1996 we found Bull’s Bridge,
the railway bridge and canal tunnel in Hayes (Middlesex) as featured in
Day of the Daleks. The tunnel under the railway bridge was
hardly recognisable when we eventually found it, as it was very overgrown
and difficult to access. As you can see, this was the period when I
sported my very hairy Tartan jacket - hey, it was all the rage then, you
know! We also experienced further difficulty when leaving the area when we
ended up driving through an industrial estate which, although it was a
Sunday afternoon, was fully manned with security guards. There didn’t seem
to be anyone attending the main gate as we went in, but on our exit we had
some rather embarrassing explanations to go through before the barrier was
lifted. I can’t recall if we gave them the real reason for our expedition
– dear God, I hope not.
