| Author's note. re Smith. Smith is a character who exists across everything that I write and, therefore, somehow proves that everything that happens happens in the same place, the same world or the same reality. One of them at any rate. To date he has appeared in two Gerald Benson novels, the Dennis Brent diaries, several short stories which obstinately refuse to be finished and the Doctor Who novella "Doctor Who and the Toast Monster". Since he doesn't fit anywhere he paradoxically fits in everywhere. That is my excuse and I am sticking to it. One day I will find a way of writing Smith that doesn't require him to be a guest star in someone else's nightmare. Until then you can expect him and his chums to pop up whenever the mood takes me.
